PETALING JAYA: Grenade training at Hobart Camp has been immediately halted pending investigations into a training exercise accident that resulted in two fatalities.
Army chief General Tan Sri Azhan Md Othman (pic) confirmed the order to cease training involving grenades.
“Grenade-throwing exercises have been immediately suspended to allow investigations to be carried out.
“The cause of the incident will be investigated by the committee that has been set up for the purpose. Follow-up actions will be taken based on the findings of the investigation,” he said when contacted yesterday.
He added that assistance would also be provided to the victims’ next of kin.
“Full aid and support will be channelled to the families of the deceased, including any compensation they are entitled to receive,” he said.
On Tuesday, two soldiers sustained fatal injuries during a training exercise at the camp in Gurun, Kedah.
The victims were identified as Koperal Norazmi Abu Bakar of the Sixth Battalion, Royal Malay Regiment, and Prebet Siti Khadijah Sungip of the First Squadron, Royal Engineers Regiment.
Both sustained injuries in an explosion during the training exercise. They were rushed to Hospital Sultan Abdul Halim in Sungai Petani but were pronounced dead upon arrival.
