PAS calls on Bersatu to remain calm amid Perikatan turmoil

PETALING JAYA: PAS has urged Bersatu to remain calm and avoid issuing rushed statements amid the current turmoil within the Perikatan Nasional coalition.

The Islamist party’s central working committee member Tan Sri Annuar Musa said no Perikatan supreme council meeting has yet been convened and any notice for such a meeting will be issued in accordance with set procedures.

In the Sinar Harian report, he added that all supreme council members, including Bersatu representatives, will be notified once the necessary procedures are completed.

In a Facebook post, Annuar said many journalists had asked if a Perikatan supreme council meeting was being held on Wednesday (June 17).

He assured that if such a meeting was being called, notices would be issued to all council members, including Bersatu representatives.

“I hope Bersatu’s leadership can remain calm and not ‘jump the gun.’ That doesn’t help.

“So far, only the PAS-Bersatu political ties have stopped.

“That is also after it appeared that PAS was being compelled to choose between the camps led by Tan Sri Muhyiddin Yassin or Datuk Seri Hamzah Zainudin,’’ Annuar wrote in a Facebook entry on Wednesday.

Muhyiddin was reported on Tuesday (June 16) saying Bersatu would remain within Perikatan and will contest the upcoming Johor and Negri Sembilan state elections under the Perikatan logo.

Bersatu Information chief Datuk Tun Faisal Ismail Aziz similarly affirmed the party’s intention to use the Perikatan emblem and said the party was awaiting an invitation to meet from Perikatan coalition chairman, Datuk Seri Dr Ahmad Samsuri Mokhtar.

Annuar also explained that PAS had initially hoped to maintain ties with both factions but was ultimately forced to sever relations with one.

He added after a decision was made to end political ties with Muhyiddin’s camp, the subsequent move would have to be carried out carefully due to various legal aspects, as well as the need to account for other member parties such as the Malaysian Indian People’s Party (MIPP) and Gerakan.

“PAS cannot do as it likes. It is the same with Hamzah’s Bersatu camp.

“Bersatu members who are involved are not just a few, and we have to take into consideration their status and intent of those who want to remain with Perikatan,’’ said Annuar.

Once legal and directional issues are clarified, he added, the supreme council meeting will be convened in an orderly manner in line with the Perikatan constitution.

Annuar stressed neither PAS nor Bersatu can act unilaterally, pointing out that the supreme council is Perikatan’s highest authority and may, in some matters, refer decisions to the Presidential Council.

“All regulations will be observed, and the Perikatan chairman understands this well,” he added, urging restraint from making unnecessary statements and warning that remarks violating party disciplinary rules could prompt further action,” he added.
