IPOH: Rohingya communities in Perak, especially in Manjung, are being closely monitored by authorities, says Datuk Seri Saarani Mohamad.
The Perak Mentri Besar said that the community is believed to have built makeshift settlements and informal schooling facilities in the area.
"Most if them are in Manjung and wear UNHCR badges. We are not sure about its authenticity because at this stage as their numbers are quite large.
"However, the matter remains under our monitoring. They are many, so they feel strong," he told after launching Perak Astronomy Month here on Thursday (June 11).
He said that the matter was also raised in the National Security Council (NSC) meeting, alongside concerns from local residents.
"We need to look at the situation from various aspects, including the safety and security of the local community. Relevant officers will conduct checks," he said.
When asked about reports that an informal school building might be demolished, he said they were making an assessment.
On the event, he said that the state government is planning the development of a Perak state observatory.
"Official moon-sighting activities for Perak are currently conducted at Baitul Hilal in Pantai Pasir Panjang, Segari, Manjung, which has long served as the state's designated astronomical observation site.
He added the planned observatory would strengthen existing facilities and expand astronomical activities in the state.
He added that a 3.8ha site has been identified at Pantai Pasir Panjang in Manjung and the project will cost around RM38.65mil.
