Zambry: MB’s stance political, not racial

Call for calm: Zambry says Onn Hafiz’s (pic, below) remarks on DAP were based on political principles and urged the public not to overreact or be excessive with criticism.

JOHOR BARU: Voters would judge leaders based on their performance, service record and ability to govern, rather than divisive rhetoric that brings no benefit to the people, says Barisan Nasional secretary-general Datuk Seri Dr Zambry Abd Kadir.

In defending Datuk Onn Hafiz Ghazi over his remarks on DAP, he said the Mentri Besar’s stance was based on political principles.

He said there was no need for any party to overreact or be excessive in criticising Onn Hafiz.

“Onn Hafiz is not a chauvinist or racist for refusing to cooperate with DAP as he has consistently prioritised the interests of the people.

“The issue is not about arrogance or refusal to engage with those holding different political views.

“The state Barisan chairman has demonstrated throughout his administration that he has served all segments of society.

“His remarks should be viewed within the context of Johor’s political landscape as the state had been governed by Barisan before the formation of the unity government,” he said in a statement.

Zambry said the stance reflected the mandate and political position of Johor Barisan.

He said Umno and Barisan had often been subjected to criticisms from political opponents, but the coalition had not responded with excessive counterattacks.

“We urge all parties to focus on preparations for the upcoming state polls, offering the best ideas and solutions for the people while strengthening the state’s economic development.

During the launching of Barisan’s election machinery on Sunday, Onn Hafiz said Barisan will not work with DAP if it is given the mandate to form the state government.

He said Johor’s political landscape differs from the federal level as the coalition has never governed alongside DAP in the state.
