Emptied nest: Python and 14 eggs safely removed from Sandakan factory zone

KOTA KINABALU: Eggs are said to be good sources of the essential mineral zinc, but conversely, a pile of zinc in a Sandakan factory area was found to have a high egg content – python eggs, to be exact.

The Civil Defence Force reports that a 2.5m-long python and 14 of its eggs were retrieved safely after the reptile was found nesting among piles of zinc early Tuesday (June 9).

Civil Defence Force officials received a call at 8.10am, reporting the discovery of the snake near Mile 8, Jalan Lintas Sibuga, and sent a team to the area.

According to Sandakan Civil Defence officer Sulaiman Salama, they found the 10kg python with its eggs curled under a hole among the piles of zinc, and carefully retrieved them.

He said the operation proceeded smoothly with no injuries reported, and the animal was also unharmed.

The snake and its eggs would be handed over to wildlife officials for further action, he added.

Sulaiman thanked the caller and reminded the public to call the authorities for help instead of trying to handle animal encounters by themselves.
