Hawana: State leaders recognise media's contribution to society

KUALA LUMPUR: State leaders have paid tribute to media practitioners in conjunction with National Journalists' Day (Hawana) 2026, recognising their role in delivering accurate and credible information while helping to build a well-informed society.

The appreciation was extended to all media personnel, including journalists, photographers, cameramen, editors, production crews and behind-the-scenes workers in the media industry.

In TERENGGANU, Mentri Besar Datuk Seri Dr Ahmad Samsuri Mokhtar said journalism rooted in integrity was becoming increasingly important in today's fast-paced environment marked by an overwhelming flow of information.

He said factual accuracy, ethical reporting and the courage to uphold the truth must continue to be preserved for the benefit of the people and the nation.

"Behind every news report that reaches the public, there are individuals who work tirelessly, go into the field, verify facts and deliver information responsibly.

"Journalists are not merely news reporters, but also among the key pillars in building a society that is well-informed, mature in its thinking and able to understand current realities in a fair and balanced manner,” he said in a Facebook post.

In PAHANG, Mentri Besar Datuk Seri Wan Rosdy Wan Ismail described the media as an important bridge between the people and the government, as well as a platform that conveys the issues, aspirations and concerns of the rakyat.

"May media practitioners continue to remain steadfast in carrying out their responsibilities to strengthen unity, preserve harmony and drive national development,” he said, while expressing appreciation for their dedication, courage and commitment in delivering credible information to the public.

Meanwhile, in PERLIS, Mentri Besar Abu Bakar Hamzah said the state government greatly valued the services and sacrifices of journalists who continue to provide timely and accurate information despite the challenges they face.

"On behalf of the Perlis state government, I would like to wish all journalists across the country a Happy National Journalists' Day,” he said.

Introduced in 2018, Hawana recognises the contributions of journalists to national development, with May 29 chosen to commemorate the first publication of Utusan Melayu in 1939.

Hawana 2026 carries the theme "Media Integrity Strengthens Credibility”. The main celebration, to be held in Penang on June 20, will be officiated by Prime Minister Datuk Seri Anwar Ibrahim. - Bernama
