Electric motorcycles with sidecars deployed in Melaka to support waste collection, public cleaning

MELAKA: Five electric motorcycles fitted with sidecars have been deployed around the Historic City as part of efforts to strengthen Melaka’s aspiration of becoming a Green State by 2035.

SWM Environment Sdn Bhd (SWM Environment) corporate general manager Mohd Norlisam Mohd Nordin said the electric vehicles (EVs) were placed at several tourist hotspots in Bandar Hilir here to support solid waste collection and public cleaning operations.

He said the green technology-based initiative, introduced in April, was aimed at improving cleaning efficiency, especially in narrow routes and high-density public areas.

“The implementation of the EV vehicles is among SWM Environment’s strategic initiatives to support efforts in reducing greenhouse gas emissions while encouraging the growth of a more sustainable city.

“At the same time, it helps enhance cleanliness and public comfort, particularly at major tourism and heritage destinations in the state,” he said when interviewed here on Thursday (May 28).

Mohd Norlisam said the use of the EVs not only improved the efficiency of cleaning operations but also reduced noise pollution and carbon emissions from fuel combustion, especially in environmentally sensitive tourism and heritage zones.

“It also reflects SWM Environment’s continued commitment towards empowering the green technology agenda and supporting the state government’s aspiration of developing cleaner, greener, modern and sustainable urban areas,” he said.

He said the initiative also formed part of the company’s efforts to improve operational efficiency towards a smarter, more innovative and sustainable solid waste management system in line with current technological developments and the needs of urban communities.

"We believe this green technology approach will create a more conducive, cleaner and comfortable environment for both tourists and the local community while contributing positively towards environmental sustainability,” he added.

Mohd Norlisam said SWM Environment would continue monitoring the effectiveness of the EV vehicles before expanding their use to other strategic locations within its operational areas.
