KUALA LUMPUR: Several Electric Train Service (ETS) and Northern KTM Komuter services were delayed by more than an hour following the theft of some 100m of cable between Sungai Siput and Kamunting.
Keretapi Tanah Melayu Bhd (KTMB) said the incident at KM95.8 of the route, crippled the signalling system, severely disrupting train operations in the northern sector.
“KTMB’s auxiliary police detected the theft early Tuesday morning. An on-site inspection confirmed missing cables had compromised the signalling system on that route,” the statement said.
Affected Northern KTM Komuter services faced delays of between 23 and 40 minutes, while all ETS services passing through the route were expected to face delay between three and 90 minutes.
KTMB’s technical team is now racing to carry out repairs and recovery work to stabilise operations and restore normal train services as quickly as possible.
Passengers have been urged to check the latest service status and delay updates via KTMB’s official social media channels, or approach on-duty station staff for further assistance, Bernama reported.
“KTMB views this cable theft with the utmost seriousness. It not only disrupts train operations but also compromises the safety and reliability of the national rail system.
“We apologise for the inconvenience caused and thank passengers for their patience and cooperation,” the statement added.
