Road collapse at roundabout disrupts Sandakan-Lahad Datu link

KOTA KINABALU: A section of the Sandakan-Lahad Datu main road at KM90 near the Sukau Roundabout collapsed early Tuesday (May 26) morning following heavy rain.

An alternative lane is in place but only allows light vehicles, making the stretch between the two Sabah east coast districts impassable for heavy vehicles.

Kinabatangan OCPD Supt Ravi Duraisamy said they were informed that the road collapse occurred because of a groundwater swell from incessant rainfall.

He said a car was involved in an accident at the site, but no serious injuries were reported.

"The driver and passengers received treatment at Hospital Kinabatangan," he said in a statement.

A contractor appointed under the Pan Borneo Highway project, JAD Reka Kaya, has built a diversion lane to ease traffic flow, he added.

However, heavy vehicles are barred from the route until further notice.

He said the Kinabatangan district Public Works Department has been alerted to take follow-up action.

Police also advised all road users to exercise caution and drive responsibly on the affected stretch to avoid mishaps.
