PM Anwar praises national sepak takraw regu team after world cup triumph

KUALA LUMPUR: Prime Minister Datuk Seri Anwar Ibrahim congratulated Malaysia’s national team regu for winning the 2026 Sepak Takraw World Cup at Stadium Titiwangsa on Saturday (May 23) night.

Anwar, in a Facebook post on Sunday (May 24), said the achievement not only made the country’s sports scene proud but also proved that strong fighting spirit, discipline, and unity can elevate Malaysia onto the world stage.

"This victory is a meaningful gift for all Malaysians and proof that our people possess extraordinary ability, resilience, and spirit when carrying the nation’s challenge.

"Congratulations to our national heroes - continue striving for excellence for our beloved Malaysia!” he said.

Malaysia emerged as champions in the team regu event after Thailand withdrew during the highly controversial final match.

The result also saw the national squad end Thailand’s dominance after the Thais had won the prestigious tournament in the previous three editions. - Bernama
