Penang police bust drug syndicate, seize RM88,000 worth of narcotics

GEORGE TOWN: Penang police have busted a drug trafficking syndicate, seizing drugs worth RM 88,000 and arresting a man and a woman in North Seberang Perai.

Penang police chief Comm Datuk Azizie Ismail said the suspects, aged 36 and 42, were detained during two raids conducted by the state narcotic criminal investigation department between 9am and 6pm on May 19. They were believed to be involved in the distribution of drugs in the form of vape cartridges, MDMA powder, ketamine powder and Erimin 5 pills.

"During the raid, police successfully arrested one man at the vehicle parking area and seized the drugs before the suspect led police to a house within the same area," he said in a statement on Thursday (May 21).

Comm Azizie said that, following an inspection of the premises, police arrested a woman and further seized various types of drugs.

He said among the drugs seized were 123 vape cartridges suspected to contain liquid methamphetamine (syabu) weighing 1,348.36 g, 11 plastic packets containing MDMA powder weighing 396g, three transparent plastic packets containing ketamine powder weighing 2.55 g and seven aluminium foil strips containing 70 Erimin 5 pills weighing 21.37 g, along with five electronic devices.

Comm Azizie said intelligence findings revealed that the drug trafficking activities carried out by the syndicate had been actively operating since March 2026.

"Urine screening tests found that one of the arrested individuals tested positive for methamphetamine.

"Checks also revealed that both suspects have prior criminal and drug- related records," he said.

He said that during the operation, police also confiscated two vehicles worth RM110,000 and RM1,069 in cash.

The total value of drug seizures is about RM88,725.50, while the value of seized assets stands at RM111,069, bringing the overall total to RM199,794 50.

All suspects have been remanded for seven days, from May 20 to May 26, to facilitate the investigation.

The case is being investigated under Section 39B of the Dangerous Drugs Act 1952, which carries the death penalty or imprisonment for life, and, if not sentenced to death, whipping of not less than 12 strokes upon conviction.
