Johor Immigration nabs 38 undocumented workers at eateries

JOHOR BARU: A total of 38 Indonesian nationals were detained during a surprise raid at several eateries here.

Johor Immigration director Datuk Mohd Rusdi Mohd Darus said the operation, dubbed Ops Selera, was carried out at about 11am on Wednesday (May 20).

“The raid was conducted following intelligence gathering and public tip-off.

“During the operation, several individuals were believed to have attempted to evade inspection, but swift action by enforcement officers managed to bring the situation under control,” he said in a statement here on Thursday.

He added that further checks found several individuals had failed to produce valid travel documents and work permits.

Mohd Rusdi said two local men believed to be working as premises managers were also detained during the operation.

He added that initial investigations found those detained consisted of 24 Indonesian men and 14 Indonesian women aged between 18 and 50, who were working as restaurant waiters and cooks.

“All those detained are believed to have committed offences under the Immigration Act 1959/63 and Immigration Regulations 1963.

“They have been placed at the Setia Tropika Immigration Depot for further investigations and action,” he said.

Mohd Rusdi added that three individuals have also been summoned to the department's office to assist in investigations.
