JPJ uncovers ‘tonto’ sticker scheme used by lorry operators to dodge enforcement

GOMBAK: JPJ has detected special stickers produced by "tontos" used to identify paying customers who would receive information to avoid enforcement.

JPJ senior enforcement director Datuk Muhammad Kifli Ma Hassan, at a press conference at the Gombak enforcement station on Wednesday (May 20), said the department detected lorry operators using stickers to identify themselves to “tontos,” who would then forward information to them to avoid enforcement action.

These tonto groups would trail JPJ teams as soon as enforcement officers begin operations before relaying current location information to lorries carrying these stickers or decals used for identification.

“They use communication devices to notify others of the whereabouts of enforcement teams, and the lorries involved will temporarily 'lay low' until the operation ends before continuing their journey.

“These lorries have also been detected using back roads to avoid being identified and subjected to enforcement action,” he said.

He added that the department views the matter seriously and will forward related information to the Malaysian Anti-Corruption Commission for further action.

"We also do not rule out the possibility of carrying out joint operations with the MACC following the detection of such activities involving lorries still using these stickers,” he said.
