PETALING JAYA: A senior police officer has been arrested for allegedly being involved in an extortion case involving a foreign man in Bukit Bintang in March.
Dang Wangi OCPD Asst Comm Sazalee Adam said the suspect was remanded for four days beginning May 16 to assist in investigations.
“Initial investigations found that the incident occurred at about 1.30am on March 14 at a nasi kandar restaurant along Jalan Angsoka, Bukit Bintang.
“The complainant claimed that his friend was detained by a group of policemen while exiting a vehicle,” he said in a statement on Sunday (May 17).
He said the complainant’s friend was allegedly detained on suspicion of being involved in scam or call centre activities.
The group also allegedly claimed that the complainant’s employer, a Chinese national, was wanted by authorities in Cambodia and China, he added.
“Upon arriving at the location, the complainant found that his friend had been handcuffed for nearly an hour before being released.
“The complainant also alleged that he was forced to hand over RM5,000 in cash to the individuals at the restaurant,” he said.
ACP Sazalee said that on the same day at about 10pm, the complainant received another phone call from an individual requesting to meet at a premises in Ampang, Selangor.
“The complainant was then allegedly asked to hand over an additional RM2,500 purportedly to settle the case involving his employer.
“Dissatisfied with the actions of the police officer, who was alleged to have threatened and demanded money from him, the complainant lodged a police report,” he said.
He added that investigations are ongoing under Section 384 of the Penal Code.
