Sarawak begins cloud seeding over multiple reservoirs

KUCHING: Sarawak started cloud seeding operations on Monday (May 11) over the reservoirs of the Batang Ai, Bakun and Murum dams in cooperation with the National Disaster Management Agency (Nadma), Malaysian Meteorological Department and the air force.

Deputy Premier Datuk Douglas Uggah said the two-day operation aimed to induce rainfall at the dam reservoirs to support stable water levels for hydropower generation and raw water supply in Sarawak.

"This reflects the Sarawak government's commitment to ensuring the security and sustainability of water supply in the state.

"We will continue to strengthen our preparedness and mitigation measures to face weather changes, which are increasingly uncertain," he said in a statement.

He added that the cloud-seeding operation was a proactive approach involving strategic collaboration with the relevant agencies.

The operation was carried out by the air force dispersing salt solution into suitable clouds from altitudes of 5,000 to 9,000 feet.

Other agencies involved included the Civil Aviation Authority of Malaysia (CAAM), state Utility and Telecommunication Ministry, Sarawak Security and Enforcement Unit, the Civil Defence Force, Sarawak Energy Bhd and Sarawak Water Sdn Bhd.
