SIK: A lorry driver pleaded not guilty at the Magistrate's Court here on Monday (May 11) to a charge of driving under the influence of drugs, resulting in the death of a baby boy last week.
Mohamad Amiruddin Mohamed Radzi, 43, made the plea after the charge was read before Sessions Court judge Rohaida Ishak.
According to the charge, the man was accused of driving a lorry under the influence of drugs, causing a road accident that led to the death of a five-month-old baby boy who was a passenger in a car.
The offence was allegedly committed near the Kampung Sadek junction along Jalan Baru Kulim-Baling-Gerik in Baling at about 10.30 pm last Thursday.
The accused was charged under Section 44(1)(a) of the Road Transport Act 1987, which carries a jail term of up to 15 years, as well as a fine of up to RM100,000 upon conviction.
The court allowed the accused bail of RM8,000 in two sureties, with the additional condition that one of the sureties must not be a family member of the accused, and set July 1 for mention of the case. - Bernama
