Retirees the target of aggressive tactics

PETALING JAYA: What began as a quick trip to the supermarket nearly ended with a retiree handing over money for a “prize” she never actually won.

She recalled rushing into a supermarket in Semenyih when a man suddenly jumped in front of her and loudly declared that she was a “lucky customer”.

Within seconds, she said, three to four sales promoters surrounded her while speaking over one another and instructing her on how to claim her “prize”.

“It was so sudden and confusing. I didn’t have time to digest anything except the main message that I won a prize,” said the 60-something woman, identified only as Christine.

Christine said she was told that she had won either a juicer or blender but needed to make payment.

“Fortunately, my daughter broke through the human barrier and pulled me away,” she said.

Even after she walked away, one of the promoters continued following her and tried to lure her back to the booth.

“I always told my daughter to be careful. I thought I was strong and prepared, but I was wrong. It was a targeted thing they did there and I would have paid had my daughter not pulled me away,” she added.

In another incident, a man in his 60s said two sales promoters forcefully tried to get him to buy a microwave oven costing almost RM4,000 at a supermarket in Klang.

The retiree, who only wanted to be known as Jim, said the sellers insisted that he had qualified for a “special promotion” and tried to push him into making an immediate decision.

He said the pair became increasingly aggressive when he hesitated and tried to leave.

“They kept saying the promotion was only for that day and that I would regret missing it.

“I told them I didn’t need such an expensive microwave, but they kept pushing it to me until we ended up arguing,” he said, adding that he eventually left without making payment.
