Four charged with murder of elderly man in Hilir Perak

TELUK INTAN: Four men were charged in the Magistrate's Court here on Thursday (May 7) with the murder of an elderly man in April.

The accused, S. R. C. Parkash Rao, M. V. Aligeswaran, T. Tiagesan and K. Shanker, all aged 25, merely nodded in understanding after the charge was read out before Magistrate Naidatul Athirah Azman.

However, no plea was recorded from them as the case falls under the jurisdiction of the High Court.

They are accused of allegedly acting together, along with another individual who is still at large, to murder N. Jeyagoby, 70, at No. 110, Lorong Emas L2/1, Pekan Baru, Hilir Perak, between 6am and 6.30am on April 17.

The charge was brought under Section 302 of the Penal Code, which carries the death penalty or imprisonment of up to 40 years and, if not sentenced to death, no less than 12 strokes of the cane upon conviction.

The prosecution was handled by deputy public prosecutor Nur Darwis Aghniya Halim Azizi, while all the accused were unrepresented. No bail was offered as the case falls under Section 302 of the Penal Code.

The court then set July 13 for the next case mention.

On April 17, the media reported that an elderly man died after being slashed with a sharp weapon believed to be a machete during a gang robbery at a residence in Pekan Baru.

Hilir Perak police chief ACP Chua Kok Lian said the victim sustained severe injuries to his hands and was pronounced dead at the scene. - Bernama
