RM15mil worth of syabu in container declared as ‘drink stuff’ seized at Sepanggar Port

KOTA KINABALU: A cargo container declared as "drink stuff" was found to contain drugs worth over RM15mil after Customs Department officers here raided the steel box.

The container arrived at Sepanggar Port from Port Klang and was undergoing screening and inspection at about 11.30am on April 22 when enforcement officers noticed 15 boxes inside that looked suspicious.

Sabah Customs Department director Dr Ahmad Taufil Sulaiman said inspections by officers including those from the Narcotics Division and the Import Export Division found substances believed to be methamphetamine weighing about 305.722kg.

He said the drugs were confiscated and the case is being investigated under Section 39B of the Dangerous Drugs Act 1952, which carries the death penalty or life imprisonment upon conviction.

"Drug syndicates are getting more cunning and are switching to all sorts of tactics to evade detection and capture," he said at a press conference here on Monday (May 4).

He added that the department would continue enforcing the law while tightening border control, especially at ports and other hotspots, to prevent smuggling.

Ahmad urged the public to assist in fighting crime and to call the Customs toll-free line at 1-800-88-8855 or contact the nearest Customs office if they know of any suspicious smuggling activities.

He assured that the identities of informers would be kept private and confidential.
