Remand extended for preacher suspected of RM12.3mil NGO funds abuse


SEREMBAN: A court here has extended the remand of an independent preacher suspected of embezzling funds from a non-governmental organisation (NGO) totalling approximately RM12.3mil.

The Malaysian Anti-Corruption Commission (MACC) Negri Sembilan said it received approval to extend the remand until next Friday (May 1) against the suspect by magistrate Nurul Saqinah Rosli at the Seremban Magistrate's Court here on Sunday.

The application to extend the remand was made after the original remand period for the suspect, who is in his 30s, expired on Sunday.

State MACC director Awgkok Ahmad Taufik Putra Awg Ismail confirmed the matter and that the case is being investigated under Section 23 of the MACC Act 2009.

The independent preacher was arrested on suspicion of abusing his power and embezzling funds from an NGO totalling approximately RM12.3mil for personal gain.

MACC chief commissioner Tan Sri Azam Baki on Saturday also reported that 14 to 15 witnesses would be called to assist in the investigation into the embezzlement of NGO funds linked to the independent preacher. - Bernama
