Fatal ravine plunge as car avoids oncoming lorry

IPOH: A man was killed and five of his family members injured after the car they were in veered off the road and fell into a 3m-deep ravine at Jalan Tapah-Cameron Highlands near Batu 21 in Tapah.

Tapah OCPD Superintendent Abdul Malik Hasim said the man, who was the driver, was found unconscious and trapped in the car at about 8.40pm on Thursday.

“The man was stretchered up from the ravine and pronounced dead by Health Ministry personnel. Five others – the man’s wife and four children – were injured and have been sent to the hospital for treatment,” he said in a statement yesterday.

A video of the accident has gone viral, showing a lorry coming downhill and negotiating a turn.

A car from the opposite direction, reportedly attempting to avoid the lorry at the bend, plunged into the ravine.

The car also overturned and landed on a shallow stream.

Supt Abdul Malik said the man and his family were on their way from Kuala Lumpur to Cameron Highlands to pay their last respects to a departed next-of-kin.

“The lorry was on its way from Ringlet to Ipoh to deliver vegetables to markets.”

Supt Abdul Malik also noted that the car and the lorry did not collide. The case, he said, would be investigated under Section 41(1) of the Road Transport Act.

“Those with information are to come forward to help by contacting Tapah police at 05-401 1222 or investigating officer Insp Muhammad Faizan Ahmad @ Mohammed Razikin at 013-208 7819,” he added.
