Sarawak Customs seizes almost RM2mil worth of contraband in Bintulu warehouse


BINTULU: The Customs Department has seized almost RM2mil worth of contraband cigarettes and liquor during a raid on a warehouse here.

Sarawak Customs director Narizan Yahya said the operation was carried out by a team from Bintulu around 5 p.m. on March 30.

"During inspection of the unmarked warehouse, officers found and seized 1.92 million sticks of cigarettes and 5,988 litres of liquor believed to be in violation of the Customs (Prohibition on Imports) Order 2023," he said at a press conference on Wednesday (April 22).

He said the contraband's value was RM473,820, while the total duties and taxes amounted to RM1,491,192.72, bringing the total seizure to RM1,965,012.72.

"The case is being investigated under Section 135(1)(d) of the Customs Act 1967 for keeping or possessing goods that Customs has not cleared or are prohibited from import," he said.
