MELAKA: Barisan Nasional must retain its two-thirds majority in Melaka to ensure continuity in the state administration, says Umno president Datuk Seri Dr Ahmad Zahid Hamidi.

He said Barisan would leverage the strong performance of the state government led by Chief Minister Datuk Seri Ab Rauf Yusoh as a 'feel-good factor' during the Melaka state polls, which is expected to be held this year.

"These achievements and progress must be maintained and used as a feel-good factor to continue attracting support for the candidates we will field," he told reporters after officiating the 2026 Melaka Umno branches conference in Ayer Keroh here on Friday (April 17).

Also present were Umno deputy president Datuk Seri Mohamad Hasan and Melaka Umno chairman Datuk Seri Ab Rauf Yusoh.

Ahmad Zahid, who is also Barisan chairman, said Umno must engage all segments of society, comprising 63% Malay voters and 37% non-Malay voters, to retain its mandate in the state.

"This engagement is essential to align with the performance demonstrated by the state government and we must also show strong performance as a political party to gain support from voters of all races in Melaka," he said. – Bernama
