PUTRAJAYA: Malaysia will remain a reliable partner and a “mate” to Australia, reaffirming its commitment to key areas including energy cooperation between both nations, says Datuk Seri Anwar Ibrahim.
The Prime Minister said the discussions with his Australian counterpart on Thursday (April 16) covered various topics including trade, investment and agriculture.
"The Strait of Hormuz has been effectively closed for nearly seven weeks. Global energy markets are under severe stress.
"I said to Prime Minister Albanese today, and I want to repeat it publicly, Malaysia will always be 'mates' through thick and thin, as we have always been," he said in a joint statement with Australian Prime Minister Anthony Albanese at the Perdana Putra Complex here today.
Anwar said that Malaysia and Australia share strong interdependence in energy resources, including fuel and LNG.
"But given the state of the world today, I want to start with energy.
"We have existing agreements, and today we reaffirmed our commitment to them," he said.
"We also signed a joint statement on Energy Security, reflecting our commitment to stable and resilient energy supplies," added Anwar.
Both leaders also witnessed the signing of a Memorandum of Understanding (MOU) between Malaysia’s Department of Islamic Development (Jakim), and Australia’s Department of Agriculture, Forestry and Fisheries,
This will enhance market access for both countries.
"We also agreed to deepen cooperation in agriculture, including sharing expertise in production and irrigation, to ensure a sustainable food supply for both Malaysians and Australians," he said.
