Probe into viral video of detainee who escaped from police custody ongoing, says Prisons Dept

PETALING JAYA: Investigations into the viral CCTV footage allegedly showing a remand detainee escaping from police custody at the Sungai Buloh Prison compound is underway, says the Prisons Department.

The department said it was examining the authenticity and original source of the footage circulating on social media.

"Security at correctional institutions remains a top priority.

"Any weaknesses identified would be addressed and appropriate action taken against those found negligent or in breach of regulations.

“The public is advised not to speculate or spread unverified information that could affect investigations and public order,” it said in a statement on Monday (April 13).

In the 34-second video clip, which had gone viral, the remand detainee is seen fleeing across the prison compound after alighting from a vehicle, with several police personnel immediately giving chase.

The incident was said to have occurred while the suspect was being transferred after a court appearance, when he escaped custody upon exiting the vehicle at the Sungai Buloh Prison compound.
