Nation’s diversity crucial for eco balance

KUCHING: Classed as “megadiverse”, Malaysia is considered one of just 17 of the world’s most biodiverse nations, says Datuk Seri Arthur Joseph Kurup (pic).

The Natural Resources and Environmental Sustainability Minister said the accolade was no small feat, given the global recognition of Malaysia as a priceless treasure trove for the planet’s ecological balance.

“When we talk about environmental conservation, Sarawak, also known as the Land of the Hornbills, stands out as Malaysia’s iconic biodiversity powerhouse.

“Sarawak has excelled at balancing economic growth with the demands of nature conservation,” he told reporters here yesterday.

Arthur had earlier handed over the appointment instruments for community rangers, including flagging off the Integrated Khazanah Operation (OBK) and launching the 1,000 Visits to Save Wildlife initiative.

Conservation International has identified Malaysia as one of only 17 “megadiverse” countries in the world, as they harbour over 70% of Earth’s biodiversity, including a high number of unique endemic species. Arthur noted that wildlife is more than just a spectacle, as it is humanity’s life support, securing clean water, buffering disasters and enabling pollination.

He said the ministry is committed to boosting the Biodiversity Protection and Patrol Programme (BP3), which features the Integrated Khazanah Operation and community rangers.

“Since launching in 2019 and as of last year, the nationwide OBK had notched up proud results by seizing goods worth RM413mil,” he added.

Besides this, he said that the Sarawak Forestry Corporation, Wildlife and National Parks Department, police, Customs and other agencies have seized over RM23mil worth of goods in the same period.
