40 undocumented migrants nabbed in midnight raid on squatter area near JB

JOHOR BARU: Forty undocumented migrants were detained in an early morning raid at the Kampung Baru Muafakat squatter settlement near here on Thursday (April 9).

Johor Immigration Department director Datuk Mohd Rusdi Mohd Darus said the impromptu operation, codenamed Ops Sapu, was conducted at 12.20am.

"Most of (the detainees) were resting when our men raided the place. Some ran away and took refuge in their rooms, but we managed to catch them,"he said in a statement.

Rusdi said those detained were between two and 59, and comprised 31 Pakistani men, three Myanmar national males, one Myanmar boy, two Myanmar women, two Indonesian women and one Indonesian girl.

"Initial checks found they did not have valid travel documents and have overstayed," he said.

Rusdi said the migrants had been living in a multi-room house in the settlement for about two months.

He added that they are being investigated for offences under Regulation 39(b) of the Immigration Regulations 1963, and Sections 6(1)(c) and 15(1)(c) of the Immigration Act 1959/63.

"They have been placed at the Setia Tropika Immigration Depot in Johor Baru for further action," he said.
