Over 100 detained in during Immigration Dept factory raids

CHERAS: A total of 133 illegal immigrants were detained in a joint enforcement operation involving factories at two locations in Shah Alam and Balakong.

The Immigration Department said 162 foreign nationals were inspected during the raids, with the majority found to have breached immigration laws.

"All 133 have been detained for further investigation and follow-up action to ensure they face legal consequences," said Immigration director-general Datuk Zakaria Shaaban.

He said the foreigners detained included Indonesians, Bangladeshis, Indians, Myanmar nationals, Nepalese, Pakistanis, Vietnamese and Chinese nationals.

The majority of those held were men aged between 20 and 45.

The operation was carried out with several enforcement agencies including the Domestic Trade and Cost of Living Ministry, Customs Department and Environment Department.

Authorities also uncovered offences under the jurisdiction of the Customs Department, including smuggled cigarettes and untaxed alcoholic beverages.

Immigration clarified that these specific offences would be handled by the Customs Department.

"Among the common immigration offences detected were not possessing valid documents, not having valid work permits and misuse of permits," Zakaria said.

He added that some individuals were found to have entered Malaysia on social visit passes but were working illegally.

Zakaria spoke at a press conference following the raid at a factory in Balakong.

During the raid, several illegal immigrants attempted to flee into nearby bushes and escape via the roof of the workers' hostel.

Zakaria said such integrated operations would be carried out continuously throughout the year.

He noted that the focus would remain on premises such as e-waste processing factories.
