Fatal Segamat crash: Suspect to be charged with murder on April 7


 JOHOR BARU: The suspect involved in an accident that claimed three lives along the Johor Baru–Seremban road in Segamat is expected to be charged with murder.

Johor police chief Comm Datuk Ab Rahaman Arsad said the suspect will be charged at the Segamat Magistrate’s Court on Tuesday (April 7).

"The investigation paper involving the case has been completed and referred to the Johor Prosecution Director’s Office on Monday (April 6).

"Following review by the prosecution, it was instructed that the suspect be charged under Section 302 of the Penal Code," he said in a statement.

Comm Ab Rahaman said that, if convicted, the suspect may be sentenced to death or imprisonment for a term of not less than 30 years and not more than 40 years.

If not sentenced to death, the suspect may also be subjected to whipping of not less than 12 strokes, he added.

The case was initially investigated under Section 41(1) of the Road Transport Act 1987.

On Thursday (April 2), it was reported that three people from the same family died while two others were injured in a three-vehicle accident at KM212 on Jalan Johor Baru–Seremban near the Taman Golden Hill intersection in Gemas Baharu, Segamat.

The 28-year-old suspect, who was driving a trailer during the incident, was previously remanded for four days.

Initial urine screening found the trailer driver positive for methamphetamine.
