Stay calm, rice supply sufficient in Sabah, says deputy minister

KOTA KINABALU: There is no need for panic buying as rice supply in Sabah remains sufficient and is under close watch by Bernas and the state government, says Datuk Chan Foong Hin.

The Deputy Agriculture and Food Security Minister said recent concerns over shortages were unfounded and largely driven by unverified information.

“The reality is that rice supply in Sabah is stable and adequate to meet the needs of the people. Panic buying only creates unnecessary pressure on the market and risks disrupting access for other consumers,” he said.

Chan said he met Bernas Sabah head of operations Hervian Kirman and the ministry’s Padi and Rice Regulatory (Sabah) deputy director Rosman Shamsul for the latest updates.

He said both agencies confirmed that distribution channels are functioning smoothly, with the state government intensifying monitoring to safeguard food security.

“Rumours and misinformation must be stopped. The people should trust official sources and spend wisely.

“Cooperation from everyone is vital to ensure stability in the market,” he added.

Chan also reminded the public that hoarding or excessive purchasing could disrupt overall supply management, urging consumers to remain rational and responsible.

His assurance comes as Sabah continues to face intermittent rice shortages in certain interior districts amid panic buying.
