Papagomo files appeal against sedition conviction

KUALA LUMPUR: Blogger Wan Muhammad Azri Wan Deris, also known as Papagomo, has filed a notice of appeal against a Sessions Court ruling that fined him RM4,000 for posting seditious content targeting the King, His Majesty Sultan Ibrahim.

His lawyer, Muhammad Rafique Rashid Ali, told Bernama that the notice of appeal was filed on April 1 at the High Court here.

According to the appeal notice, Wan Muhammad Azri, as the appellant, is challenging the Sessions Court decision dated March 30, following his conviction on one count under Section 4(1) of the Sedition Act 1948.

Sessions Court Judge Norma Ismail sentenced him to a RM4,000 fine, with a default prison term of four months if the fine is not paid.

On May 2, 2024, Wan Muhammad Azri pleaded not guilty to publishing seditious material on his X account regarding the visit of the owner of KK Supermart & Superstore Sdn Bhd to Sultan Ibrahim.

He was charged with committing the offence at a condominium in Bukit Bintang here at noon on April 29, 2024, under Section 4(1)(c) of the Sedition Act 1948, which carries a maximum penalty of a RM5,000 fine, up to three years' imprisonment, or both.

On Sept 24, 2025, the court ordered him to enter his defence after finding that the prosecution had established a prima facie case.

During the trial, seven prosecution witnesses were called to testify starting in October 2024, while Wan Muhammad Azri testified in his own defence. – Bernama
