Man kills younger brother, shot dead by police in Tenom

TENOM: A 54-year-old man was shot dead by his elder brother with a homemade bakakuk (shotgun) in Kampung Kangkawang here on Sunday (March 29), before the 57-year-old suspect himself was killed by police.

Tenom DCP Superintendent Azmir Abd Razak said the incident occurred at about 8am, with the victim sustaining eight gunshot wounds to his back, reported Sinar Harian.

Police from the Tenom District Police Headquarters were dispatched to the scene after receiving a report of the shooting. Villagers informed them that the armed suspect was inside a house, threatening to shoot anyone who approached.

"Police surrounded the house and ordered the suspect to surrender three times, but he refused," Azmir said.

Officers then fired several tear gas canisters into the house. The suspect allegedly ran towards the kitchen while pointing his weapon at one of the policemen, prompting an officer to fire three shots in self-defence.

"The shots hit the suspect’s right arm, left chest and left rib. Police entered the house and found the suspect lying in the kitchen with the firearm beside him," he said.

A bakakuk with one live round, additional live ammunition, spent bullet casings, and a long machete were seized.

Azmir said initial information suggested the suspect had mental health problems, but investigations are ongoing under Section 302 and Section 307 of the Penal Code.
