Cops nab man over social media comment allegedly insulting religion

KUALA LUMPUR: A man has been arrested after uploading a comment that allegedly insulted the Prophet Muhammad, city police say.

In a statement Wednesday (March 25), Kuala Lumpur police chief Comm Datuk Fadil Marsus said that the police had received a police report on the comment on March 22.

"A police report was received regarding a viral post on Facebook containing comments insulting Prophet Muhammad, made by an account owner using the name 'Sakti Sakti Sakti'.

"On March 24 at around 8.30pm, a police team from the Butterworth police station successfully arrested the suspect, a 47-year-old man in Butterworth, Penang.

"Also seized from the suspect was a mobile phone believed to have been used to upload the statement," he said.

The suspect, he added, has been remanded for three days, until March 27.

The case is currently being investigated under Sections 298A and Section 505(c) of the Penal Code, as well as under Section 233 of the Communications and Multimedia Act 1998.

"The police advise the public not to upload or share any content touching on religious, racial, or royal institution sensitivities (3R) on social media that could disrupt national harmony. Firm action without compromise will be taken against any individual who violates the law," he said.
