Traffic volume building up gradually, says LLM

KUALA LUMPUR: Traffic from the Klang Valley to the east coast has started to build up, while authorities expect about 1.5 million vehicles to enter Penang during the Hari Raya Aidilfitri period.

A spokesperson for the Malaysian Highway Authority (LLM) said congestion was reported between Gombak and Genting Sempah as well as from Bukit Tinggi to Lentang yesterday.

Traffic flow to the north and south remained largely smooth, with only minor congestion reported between Bandar Baru and Jawi due to a broken-down lorry.

LLM expects traffic volume to increase following the 50% toll discount announcement, the spokesperson said, Bernama reported.

Road users are also encouraged to plan their trips by referring to the Travel Time Advisory (TTA) schedule via the MyPLUS-TTA app and to obtain the latest traffic updates through the toll-free PLUSLine at 1-800-88-0000, the X account @plustrafik or LLM’s hotline at 1-800-88-7752 and its X account @llmtrafik.

In Butterworth, Penang police chief Comm Datuk Azizee Ismail said about 1.5 million vehicles are expected to enter Penang over six days – from today until March 24 – during the Ops Selamat 26 held in conjunction with Hari Raya celebrations.

He said 330 officers and personnel from the Traffic Investigation and Enforcement Department will be deployed, supported by the Crime Prevention and Community Safety Department, the Road Transport Department, local authorities and PLUS Malaysia Berhad.

“Our focus will be on accident-prone and congested areas, including the North-South Expressway and districts with high fatality rates,” he said after launching the operation at Juru Toll Plaza yesterday.

In Kuantan, Pahang police have identified 36 accident-prone “black spots” and 25 “hot spots” statewide to be given priority attention during Ops Selamat, said state police chief Datuk Seri Yahaya Othman.

More than 200 traffic officers and personnel will be mobilised, he said after the handing-over ceremony of the Pahang Narcotics Criminal Investigation Department chief at the Pahang police contingent headquarters here.
