KUCHING: Resplendent in a green songket baju Melayu, the White Cat statue at Jalan Padungan here is all set for Hari Raya Aidilfitri.

The cat’s attire is further enhanced by festive lights and decorations, part of a longstanding initiative by the Kuching South City Council (MBKS) that reflects Sarawak’s unity.

Sarawak Deputy Premier Datuk Dr Sim Kui Hian said the White Cat is well-known for being dressed in different costumes to mark festive occasions.

“This is truly in line with what Sarawak is about – harmony, respect and nation-building.

“The spirit of unity is even more important at a time when the world is facing many conflicts,” he said at the White Cat’s lighting-up ceremony on Tuesday night.

Dr Sim added that Sarawakians celebrate festivals in a spirit of mutual respect.

Kuching South mayor Datuk Wee Hong Seng said the practice of dressing up the cat for festive occasions began 20 years ago and has since become a tradition.

“We change the costume every year to keep it fresh. Even before Chinese New Year, we had already planned the design for Raya,” he said, adding that this year’s design features a green theme.

Kuching South deputy mayor Datuk Zaiedi Suhaili said festive occasions highlight Sarawak’s multicultural harmony, with people celebrating side by side.

“We just completed the Chinese New Year celebration.

“This is part of our culture, of how our various communities and religions live peacefully,” he said.
