No food shortage this Hari Raya

PUTRAJAYA: Malaysians have been urged to celebrate Hari Raya with peace of mind, as the government guarantees an ample supply of rice and essential foodstuffs.

Agriculture and Food Security Minister Datuk Seri Mohamad Sabu assured the public that stocks of rice, poultry, eggs, fish, meat and vegetables are sufficient to last at least until June.

However, he reminded citizens to remain mindful of their spending in line with the Prime Minister Datuk Seri Anwar Ibrahim’s calls for financial prudence.

“For now, there is no need for worry. Celebrate Hari Raya calmly, while continuing to be thrifty as suggested by the Prime Minister,” he said during a press briefing here yesterday after a special Cabinet meeting yesterday.

To bolster food security, Mohamad said the Cabinet has approved an extension of the national rice stockpile.

He confirmed that reserves have been increased to cover a nine-month period, ensuring long-term stability.

Despite the stable outlook, he said the ministry remains vigilant regarding global geopolitical tensions, particularly the ongoing conflict involving Israel, the United States and Iran.

He said while Malaysia’s primary food imports from India, Pakistan, Asean, Brazil and Australia do not typically transit the Strait of Hormuz, officials are monitoring potential spikes in transport and logistics costs.

Mohamad also said the ministry would intensify Agro Madani and Rahmah sales, offering essential goods at 10% to 30% below market prices.

“Efforts to increase fish and vegetable supplies through 5,000 Komuniti Madani projects will be ramped up to ensure local food availability.

“We do not know when the current international crises will end. Therefore, we are taking these early steps to ensure food remains sufficient and guaranteed.

“For now, celebrate Raya as usual,” he added.
