PLUS to activate smart lanes at 34 locations over Hari Raya

PETALING JAYA: PLUS Malaysia Berhad will activate 34 smart lanes at strategic locations along its highway network to improve traffic flow during the Hari Raya Aidilfitri holidays.

PLUS managing director Datuk Nik Airina Nik Jaffar said this is to ease congestion during peak travel periods when main lanes slow down.

She added that activation of smart lanes at each location would depend on traffic conditions.

"Notification of smart lane activation can be seen on signboards and green flashing lights installed at designated locations," she said during a press conference on Thursday (March 12).

For safety purposes, Nik Airina said the maximum speed limit in smart lanes is set at 60kph.

She said to further improve traffic flow, PLUS will temporarily open a 3km-long third lane between Simpang Renggam and Sedenak (KM45.1 to KM42.5 southbound) as part of the Johor Lane Widening Project from March 18 to April 5.

"In addition, PLUS will ensure that there are no lane closures on its highways during the festive season, including in the Johor Lane Widening Project zone.

"However, exceptions will be made for critical repair works, emergencies and accident clearance operations," she said.

Nik Airina added that over 6,000 personnel would be deployed across the highway network, including PLUSRonda teams, traffic monitoring centre operators, People's Volunteer Corps (Rela) members and maintenance crews to assist with traffic control.

"Traffic monitoring will be strengthened supported by 24-hour highway patrols.

"Emergency Response Team (ERT) personnel will be stationed at nine strategic locations to ensure rapid responses to incidents, while support staff from PLUS headquarters and regional offices will be deployed to Rest and Service Areas to maintain facilities in optimal condition," she said.
