10 injured as express bus plunges into ravine on Johor Baru–Ayer Hitam road

JOHOR BARU: An assistant driver and his nine passengers were injured when the express bus they were on plunged into a ravine at KM19 of the Johor Baru-Ayer Hitam road here.

Johor Baru North OCPD Asst Comm Radin Ramlan Radin Taha said police were alerted to the incident at about 8.15pm on Sunday (March 8).

“The express bus from Terminal Bersepadu Selatan, Kuala Lumpur, was heading to the Larkin bus station when the incident happened.

“The accident is believed to have occurred when the bus driver, a 62-year-old local man, lost control of the vehicle after veering into a U-turn lane.

“This led the bus to plunge into a ravine on the roadside,” he said in a statement here on Monday (March 9).

ACP Radin Ramlan said the accident injured all nine passengers on board and a 51-year-old assistant driver who was accompanying the bus driver.

“They have been sent to Sultanah Aminah Hospital for medical treatment,” he said, adding that the bus driver was not injured.

He said the case is being investigated under Section 43(1) of the Road Transport Act 1987 for careless and inconsiderate driving.

ACP Radin Ramlan also urged anyone with information about the incident to contact investigating officer Insp Muhammad Hafiz Aminuddin at 011-35807871 to assist in the investigation.
