Local economy remains steady despite West Asia conflict, says Finance Minister’s pol-sec

IPOH: The local economy remains stable for now despite rising tensions in West Asia, says political secretary to the Finance Minister Muhammad Kamil Abdul Munim.

“For now, the situation is still good, but the government will take important measures to ensure the local economic conditions remain stable,” he said after officiating at the motorcycle handover ceremony to 22 underprivileged individuals listed under eKasih on Friday (March 6).

Kamil said that any crisis, especially wars occurring anywhere in the world, including West Asia, would inevitably affect the global economic supply chain.

“We know that in any crisis, particularly those involving war, there will be an impact on the global economic chain, whether in terms of oil prices or certain other goods.

“The government is closely monitoring developments from time to time to ensure that all economic planning can be managed and addressed with better preparedness,” he said.

He said he hopes the parties involved will pursue dialogue and negotiations through diplomatic channels to resolve the conflict.

Kamil added that the government’s immediate priority is to ensure that essential goods such as meat, chicken, rice and sugar remain unaffected.

“At present, the supply of these basic necessities remains sufficient. However, some goods may be affected due to the situation, particularly oil or products imported from the Middle East.

“This could happen due to disruptions such as the closure of airspace or sea routes, which may impact supply chains,” he said.

Separately, when asked about the date of the 16th General Election, Kamil said the timing has yet to be determined.

“It could be next month, or in two or three months’ time. For now, the focus should be on carrying out our responsibilities.

“When the time comes, the election will be held. We should not lose focus on strengthening the country’s economic position and implementing the policies that have been planned for the people,” he said.

Kamil also urged the public not to be distracted by attempts to divert attention from the government’s efforts to implement policies for the rakyat.

“There may be attempts by certain parties to shift attention away from the government’s work or to attack the credibility and integrity of national institutions.

“My call to the public is to continue supporting efforts to develop and build the nation together,” he said.
