Cops nab man for allegedly performing lewd acts in Segamat mosque

SEGAMAT: Police have arrested a local man for allegedly performing lewd acts inside a mosque at Bukit Siput near here on Thursday (March 5).

Segamat OCPD Supt Jumazanzahir Chek Ismail said the suspect was detained at 3.15am in Taman Air Biru, Pasir Gudang, on Friday (March 6).

He said the suspect, in his 20s, was apprehended by a team from the Segamat District Police Contingent headquarters criminal investigation department.

“Initial investigations found that the suspect was not a resident of the Segamat district and also a holder of an OKU card for learning disabilities," Supt Jumazanzahir said in a statement.

He said the suspect has been remanded for four days until Monday (March 9) to complete the investigation papers and the case is being investigated under Section 377D of the Penal Code.

Section 377D of the Penal Code is a provision used to punish acts of “gross indecency” and offenders can be jailed up to two years.

“The investigation papers will then be referred to the deputy public prosecutor for further action," added Supt Jumazanzahir.

It was reported on Thursday (March 5) that the police had received a report from a 40-year-old woman who was performing the solat dhuha (voluntary prayer) at 11am on that day.

Fearing for her safety, the woman immediately left the place and the suspect’s gross acts were captured in the CCTV at the mosque which eventually led to his arrest.
