PM term limit Bill reflects Anwar's commitment to reform, says Amirudin

KUALA LUMPUR: Selangor Mentri Besar Datuk Seri Amirudin Shari (pic) has called Datuk Seri Anwar Ibrahim's move to introduce a constitutional amendment Bill limiting a prime minister's tenure to 10 years historic and bold.

"This bold move is the first time any prime minister or party president has brought such a proposal to the Dewan Rakyat, and it reflects his (Anwar's) commitment," he said in a statement on Tuesday (March 3).

"All 31 PKR MPs were among the 146 lawmakers who supported the amendment.

"I want to express my gratitude to the MPs who are committed to the reform agenda."

Amirudin, a PKR vice president and the MP for Gombak, said it was unfortunate that with 32 MPs absent and 44 opposition MPs abstaining, the amendment fell short of the 148 votes required to pass.

"This shows that the process and responsibility of reform, which is the soul of PKR, cannot be achieved solo.

"It is the collective responsibility of various parties.

"We may have lost a golden opportunity to realise the people's mandate by just two votes, but this result illustrates that no MP rejected the proposal for the prime minister's term to be limited to 10 years," he said.

He said Perikatan Nasional has shown that it does not dare put national interests above political interests.

"This is a reminder to all parties in the government that MP's cannot be complacent about their responsibilities.

"We should not allow one incident to dampen the spirit of the reform agenda for the good of the people and the country we love," he said.

On Monday (March 2) the Constitutional (Amendment) Bill 2026 to limit the Prime Minister's tenure limit to two terms failed to receive two-thirds majority approval from the Dewan Rakyat after a bloc vote.
