Haze has not affected fishing activities, says Fisheries Dept

BUTTERWORTH: The current haze has not affected fishing activities, including operations at sea, with the Fisheries Department yet to receive any reports of disruptions.

Its senior director (Capture Fisheries Resources) Ruzaidi Mamat said fishermen should nevertheless exercise caution, particularly when navigating in areas where visibility is poor.

"We are concerned that poor visibility could jeopardise the safety of fishermen carrying out their activities at sea. So, they need to be careful," he told reporters after launching the Kha Yang 666 carrier vessel at the Inner Wharf here on Sunday (Oct 11).

Owned by Kha Yang Marine Sdn Bhd, the vessel transports tuna and is registered under the Malaysian flag, with Penang as its home port.

Ruzaidi said the department would continue to monitor the situation and any developments concerning the impact of the haze on fishing operations.

As of 9am on Sunday, 15 areas nationwide recorded unhealthy Air Pollutant Index (API) readings, with Pasir Gudang, Johor, recording the highest at 180. - Bernama
