PAC to probe financial irregularities, governance at UKM, says chairman

KUALA LUMPUR: The Public Accounts Committee (PAC) to probe alleged financial irregularities and governance at Universiti Kebangsaan Malaysia (UKM), says Datuk Mas Ermieyati Samsudin.

The PAC chairman said the probe is part of the proceedings the committee will initiate into three key issues as highlighted in the latest Auditor-General's Report.

“The report has raised issues regarding violations of the university constitution, revenue collection activities without mandate, deep-rooted conflicts of interest among civil servants and the failure of project management to upgrade dilapidated buildings and facilities,” she said in a press conference at the Dewan Rakyat media room on Monday (March 2).

Mas Ermieyati said the proceedings would also look into the Research, Development, Commercialisation and Innovation (R&D&C&I) Programme.

“The R&D&C&I Programme, according to the report this time, is clearly facing performance deficits as well as waste and critical governance problems, and a loss of intellectual assets,” the Masjid Tanah MP said.

The PAC proceedings will also touch on the management issue of Syarikat Pelaburan Hartanah Berhad (PHB).

“The report has raised issues regarding the management of the company, especially the governance crisis of the physical projects being carried out,” she added.

Mas Ermieyati said the date of the proceedings and the witnesses who will be called to give evidence and explanations for the three issues will be determined later.

“Based on the report, the PAC found that there were various systemic weaknesses, concerning breaches of governance and leakage of public allocations.

“The PAC always takes the obligation of check and balance seriously to ensure that every cent of taxpayers' money is managed with the highest level of integrity, transparency and efficiency,” she added.
