Police welcome installation of AI CCTV at Pan Borneo Highway

SIBU: Mukah police welcomed the move by the Sarawak Public Works Department (JKR) to install the first closed-circuit television (CCTV) camera with artificial intelligence (AI) technology at the Selangau P-turn on Pan Borneo Highway, near here, recently.

Mukah OCPD Deputy Supt Muhamad Rizal Alias said the installation of the AI CCTV was timely, especially ahead of the increase in traffic movement in conjunction with the upcoming Hari Raya Aidilfitri holidays and school holidays.

He said the location under the jurisdiction of the Mukah police headquarters was among the areas that frequently recorded road accidents.

"It is hoped the installation will raise the level of compliance of road users as every movement will be monitored, especially for offences such as going against the flow.

"Any offence detected and recorded will be channelled to the Mukah police Traffic Investigation and Enforcement Division for further action in accordance with existing legal provisions,” he said when contacted by Bernama.

Meanwhile, Sarawak Public Works director Datuk Dr Cassidy Morris, in a post on the department’s official Facebook, said the installation of the first AI CCTV on Sarawak Pan Borneo Highway is a proactive step to strengthen the safety aspects and monitor the cleanliness of public space.

According to him, the initiative is in line with Sarawak’s development aspirations towards a smart city and all parties are advised to be extra cautious at the section.

Cassidy said the system is expected to enable monitoring of traffic movements more effectively, thus supporting efforts to prevent accidents and improve traffic management in the Selangau section.

Meanwhile, DSP Rizal said police would continue to conduct patrols and enforcement activities as usual in the area even though AI CCTV has been installed.- Bernama
