Thunderstorms, heavy rain expected in Sarawak and Sabah until 6pm


PETALING JAYA: The Malaysian Meteorological Department (MetMalaysia) has issued a warning of thunderstorms, heavy rain and strong winds across parts of Sarawak and Sabah, effective until 6pm on Friday (Feb 27).

MetMalaysia, in a statement at 2.45pm, said the severe weather is expected to affect Kuching, Serian, Samarahan, Sri Aman, Sarikei (Pakan and Julau), Sibu, Mukah (Dalat and Mukah), Kapit (Song, Kapit and Bukit Mabong) and Bintulu in Sarawak.

In Sabah, the warning covers Pedalaman (Tambunan), Pantai Barat (Ranau), Tawau (Tawau, Kunak and Semporna) and Sandakan (Telupid).

MetMalaysia issues these warnings when there are signs indicating a thunderstorm with a rainfall intensity exceeding 20mm per hour that is imminent or expected to occur for more than one hour.

A thunderstorm warning is a short-term warning that is valid for a period not exceeding six hours for any single release.
