Hamzah remains Opposition chief despite Bersatu exit

DESPITE his recent sacking from Bersatu, Datuk Seri Hamzah Zainudin will remain as the Opposition chief in the Dewan Rakyat for now, says Opposition chief whip Datuk Seri Takiyuddin Hassan.

“I have just met the Dewan Rakyat Speaker (Tan Sri Johari Abdul) and for now, Hamzah is still the Opposition leader.

“He has agreed. This is our position for the time being,” said the Kota Bharu MP at a press conference in Parliament.

Takiyuddin added that there were only two days left in the current Dewan Rakyat meeting and, as such, there was no need to make any changes to the MP’s seating positions at the moment.

PAS, which has the largest number of seats in the Perikatan Nasional opposition bloc, had previously said that the new Opposition leader would be appointed from among its MPs.

This follows the appointment of PAS vice-president Datuk Seri Dr Ahmad Samsuri Mokhtar as Perikatan’s new chairman.

According to pundits, among the possible candidates for the role of Opposition leader are Ahmad Samsuri, Takiyuddin, who is the PAS secretary-general and PAS deputy president Datuk Seri Tuan Ibrahim Tuan Man.

Meanwhile, when met by The Star, Masjid Tanah MP Datuk Mas Ermieyati Samsudin said that she is not aware of any changes to her position as the Public Accounts Committee (PAC) chairman.

“So far (as I am concerned), no changes. I am still with the PAC,” she said.

Mas Ermieyati recently resigned as the Masjid Tanah Bersatu division chief.

She also attended a political “reset” event.

Hamzah, who was expelled from Bersatu on Feb 13, was among the casualties when the party recently conducted a purge that resulted in 17 members, including four MPs and two state assemblymen, being sacked for allegedly sabotaging the party.
