PETALING JAYA: Malaysian Anti-Corruption Commission (MACC) chief commissioner Tan Sri Azam Baki has been called in to give his statement to the special committee investigating his ownership of 17.7 million shares purchased at RM1.416mil in Velocity Capital Partner Bhd.

Chief Secretary to the Government Tan Sri Shamsul Azri Abu Bakar said the committee convened on Feb 19 to record Azam’s explanation.

“We are examining compliance and regulatory aspects related to the ownership and are assessing all evidence obtained thus far,” he said in a statement.

Shamsul Azri, who chairs the committee, said more witnesses will be called in to assist in completing the investigation.

He said the committee would ensure that the probe is conducted in a transparent, independent and professional manner.

“The findings and recommendations for further action will be submitted to the relevant authorities, including if there is any breach of criminal law or regulations in force,” Shamsul Azri added.

On Feb 13, the Cabinet decided that a special committee would investigate the controversy surrounding Azam’s alleged share ownership.

Government spokesperson Datuk Fahmi Fadzil had said once investigations have been completed, it will be tabled to the Cabinet for further action.

On Feb 14, Attorney General Tan Sri Mohd Dusuki Moktar confirmed that the committee had started its probe.

Azam previously stated that he no longer held shares in any company and that all past share transactions were conducted transparently and in full compliance with government regulations.

He also said that his trading account is currently inactive and can be verified with Bursa Malaysia.
