Flash floods cause slow traffic near Ipoh on PLUS Highway

KUALA LUMPUR: Traffic flow on the North-South Expressway (PLUS) is reported to be slow in both directions near Ipoh, Perak tonight following flash floods along that stretch.

A spokesperson for the Malaysian Highway Authority (LLM) said that the flash flood occurred at Kilometer 271.8, resulting in the left and emergency lanes of the southbound route being obstructed.

"Traffic is moving slowly from the Meru Toll to Ipoh Selatan in both directions. Additionally, the northern stretch is also slow from Sungai Buloh to Rawang Selatan," the spokesperson said when contacted on Monday (Feb 16) night.

For the southern stretch, an increase in traffic volume has been detected since 4:00 pm today, stretching from Nilai to Seremban, as well as from Senai to Kulai and Sedenak.

Slow traffic was also reported on the Penang Bridge from the Island towards Perai, and along the Juru to Seberang Jaya stretch.

As for the East Coast situation, traffic is expected to continue increasing toward that direction late tonight, as many commuters are only just beginning their journey back to their hometowns after work.

"So far, slow traffic has been detected from Bukit Tinggi to Bentong, while at Kilometer 71.5 from Karak to Bentong, an accident has caused the temporary closure of the left and emergency lanes," the spokesperson explained, adding that traffic flow within the Klang Valley is gradually smoothing out.

Due to heavy rain in various locations, users are advised to exercise extra caution on wet road surfaces and to maintain a safe following distance.

Travelers are also encouraged to plan their journeys by referring to the Travel Time Advisory (TTA) via the MyPLUS-TTA app, and to obtain the latest traffic updates via the PLUSLine toll-free number at 1-800-88-0000, the @plustrafik X account, or the LLM line at 1-800-88-7752 and @llmtrafik on X. - Bernama
