MELAKA: An 18-year-old believed to be the mother of a newborn found lifeless in a public toilet at Taman Bandaraya Bukit Serindit recreational park has been detained by Melaka police.

Melaka police chief Deputy Comm Datuk Dzulkhairi Mukhtar said the unmarried suspect was arrested in a ward at Hospital Melaka.

She was receiving treatment for suspected bleeding after giving birth on Friday (Feb 13).

He said the suspect was believed to have delivered the baby at about 8.30pm on Thursday (Feb 12) at her family home near the recreational park.

“Preliminary investigations found that her family members were unaware that the suspect had been pregnant.

“The suspect, when questioned by my officers, admitted to giving birth to the baby,” he said.

Earlier, a janitor discovered the body of a baby, with the umbilical cord still intact and wrapped in a garment, inside a female public toilet at the recreational park at 9.40am on Friday (Feb 13).
