KUALA LUMPUR: Debates over the Johor Bahru-Singapore Rapid Transit System (RTS) Link Bill 2026 took an unexpected turn in the Dewan Rakyat when a government backbencher suddenly congratulated Muar MP Syed Saddiq Syed Abdul Rahman with a cheerful “selamat pengantin baru” (congratulations on your wedding).
Mohd Sany Hamzan (PH–Hulu Langat), who stood up to interject during Syed Saddiq's debate, highlighted how the Muda representative was wearing a full yellow baju Melayu.
"I’m not sure… but Muar (Syed Saddiq), over the past few days, has been frequently wearing the baju Melayu. That must mean something serious is coming," he quipped, drawing only a smile from Syed Saddiq.
Mohd Sany then proceeded with his proposal on easing traffic flow between Johor Bahru and Bukit Chagar in Singapore, before taking the opportunity to once again offer his “congratulations to the newlyweds.”
To this, Syed Saddiq replied: "Ya Allah, don't worry, I will give you the invitation when the time comes."
For months, Syed Saddiq and singer-actress Bella Astillah have been the talk of the town, with fans closely watching every public appearance, interaction and subtle hint.
Social media has been flooded with comments manifesting wedding bells, hashtags predicting a proposal and supporters openly rooting for the couple to take the next step.
Earlier, the Dewan Rakyat passed the Johor Bahru-Singapore Rapid Transit System (RTS) Link Bill 2026 via voice vote on Thursday (Feb 12).
The Bill ensures clear enforcement powers for officers from both countries, defines criminal jurisdiction for cross-border incidents, and provides legal protection for enforcement personnel while safeguarding Malaysia’s sovereignty.
